Someone read the book that you recommended, and plunged head first into it. Someone smiled after a hard day’s work, because they remembered the joke that got told them today. Someone loves themself a little bit more, because you have them a compliment. Never think that you have no influence whatsoever. Your trace, which you leave behind with every good deed, cannot be erased.”

Traveling – it gives you home in thousand strange places, then leaves you a stranger in your own land.”
– Ibn Batuta
Living as an expat for the past 6 years I find this is exactly how I feel. Whilst “home” for us is Australia and we love to return, every year it feels more foreign to me. Travel has added so many new dimensions to the way I see the world. Every new experience adds a new layer of perception – I find myself imagining that I actually live in every place we visit, and how would I feel if this was my everyday life. It truly changes your perception of home, acceptance and gratitude. Follow Family Travel in the Middle East on Instagram.
The Road not Taken – by Robert Frost
My favorite travel quote is from the Robert Frost poem, “The Road Not Taken.” It’s the last three lines:
Two Roads Diverged in a Woods and I-
I took the one less traveled by and that has made all the difference
– Robert Frost
I love this poem because it pretty much describes my life, but I also like the mystery of it. It’s not clear whether the “I” in the poem is happy or sad about this decision he made: whether the consequences of that choice were good or bad. I chose the road less traveled by when I joined the Peace Corps, which led me to Malawi, Africa. There I met my future husband, which is why I live in the Netherlands now. My Peace Corps experience also introduced me to my career as a teacher. The message of the poem applies to everything in our lives, doesn’t it? We never know, in any given moment, with any of the dozens of decisions we make every single day – big or little – whether that particular decision could change our lives. Crossing the street to borrow a cup of sugar could lead you to meeting the love of your life, or it could get you hit by a bus. It’s a wonderful thing to ponder, especially while traveling!

I Face the Horizon, the Horizon is my Home – Frank Turner
This is a line in a song by English folk singer, Frank Turner, called ‘The Road’. While I traveling through Europe, I had a playlist of Frank Turner on repeat. This quote stuck with me as I like to travel fast – to chase the horizon. These lyrics became so influential to me, that half of my travel blog’s name comes from this song.

You Will Never be Completely at Home Again
“You will never be completely at home again, because part of your heart always will be elsewhere. That is the price you pay for the richness of loving and knowing people in more than one place.”
– Miriam Adeney
This is my favourite travel quote as it is just so real to me, and it explains my experience of travelling so perfectly. Pieces of my heart now belong in all corners of the globe. From friends and family spread across the world, to beautiful landscape and cities that have been home, even though just for a short period. Still, after years of travelling and leaving bits of my heart behind, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
