When planning a beach vacation in the US, the cities of Gulf Shores, Destin and Orange Beach on the Gulf of Mexico (panhandle of Florida area) are usually top of the list – for good reason. Most have amazing white sand beaches with water that at times can be very blue or green. The water is warm and most areas offer plenty of beach related activities to enjoy.
Destin is on the Florida Panhandle and is one of the most popular cities to visit on the Gulf Coast. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are cities on the beaches of Alabama and are also very popular vacation spots. Both are wonderful choices for a beach break.

Where is the Best Place to Stay? Destin, Gulf Shores or Orange Beach?
The majority of people visiting the Gulf Coast stay in Condos or beach houses. Generally the local companies are the best places to start your search but VRBO and AirBnB can be good options as well.
Destin, Florida Places to Stay
Destin has a combination of high end condominiums with a few older buildings. Some have extensive pools and amenities. Destin also has options for houses. Many of the properties offered may not be directly on the beach which can be a big problem for vacationers. Getting a condo or house that does not offer separate beach access can make going to the beach a pretty stressful experience.
The San Destin area east of Destin is another good choice for a place to stay. This planned Golf Cart community offers condos both on the beach and on the bay side. San Destin has wonderful entertainment options and most vacationers will not need to leave the resort area to have a fabulous vacation.
Destin condos are generally going to be more expensive than rentals in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.
Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Alabama Places to stay
Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Alabama have a wide variety of options for places to stay. Gulf Shores has more options for a classic beach vacation with smaller condo complexes and a laid back beach vibe. Orange Beach generally offers newer (and much larger) buildings with some having lazy rivers and numerous activity options. The back bay areas of Orange Beach can be a more relaxing area to stay. The west end of Gulf Shores has larger beach front homes for big groups.

Who has the Best Beaches? Gulf Shores or Destin?
Destin, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach all have miles of white sandy beaches. You can’t go wrong with any of them but there are benefits to each place.
Destin Florida’s Beaches
Destin is known for it’s white sandy beaches and tendency for blue green water but there is a problem. In the city of Destin there is less than 1/2 mile of public beach access which can quickly get crowded. Most of the beach is private property.
If you have rented a property that does not have beach access then finding parking and getting to the beach can be difficult. When looking for options for beaches online, most websites recommend beaches that are outside the city limits of Destin. With summer traffic – getting out of the city can be pretty time intensive.
If you rent a condo located directly on the beach then you’ll be able to enjoy the beach. Many places offer rental chairs at the condo. Even the private beaches can be crowded.
Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Alabama Beaches
Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have much better public access to the beaches although during the summer, access spots can still fill up quickly. Gulf Shores has a wonderful public beach area that feels like a classic beach town at the intersection of the towns 2 main roads.
The main public beach in Gulf Shores also has wheel chair access as well as dining options, shops, play areas, volleyball courts and more.
Orange Beach is currently building out a public beach access area with dining and shopping as well.

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach both have wonderful white sang beaches. At times the water may not be as green or blue. Generally it gets greener the farther you go away from Mobile Bay. If the waves are higher then there is less green as well. However, I would say many times the water can be just as clear and beautiful as Destin.
Who has the best Beaches? Gulf Shores or Destin?
Again – Depends on what you’re looking for
- Best Public Beach Access Amenities: Gulf Shores with Orange Beach a Close Second
- Greener water: Destin but Orange Beach is not that much different. The closer you get to Mobile Bay it gets darker. Going west you will start to see oil rigs that can interfere with views.
- White Sand: All about the same
- Private Beach Amenities: All have condos where you can rent chairs and park in front of you condo for the day but I would say Destin for this one
- Less Crowds and better chance for a quiet beach: Not Destin … I’d look at Perdido Key, Fort Morgan, Navarre if you want quiet.
Who has the best Beach Vibe? Gulf Shores or Destin
All 3 beach front cities have wonderful marketing but each of these cities are unique with a different feel and vibe.
Gulf Shores: “Small Town, Big Beach”
Despite large levels of expanding in the city and even more expansion in surrounding cities. Gulf Shores is one of the few beach towns that has been able to keep it’s family friendly roots. There have been a few obnoxiously big condos that have some how passed restrictions but overall it’s still a wonderful and low key beach town.
If you’re looking for low key beach vacation where you’re rarely wear shoes except to drop into the shop on the corner or a restaurant, Gulf Shores is where you want to be. Most condo complexes are small. There will be traffic but once you are on the island it is generally not as intense as nearby cities. There are very few places where you would want to dress up to go out to eat. Swimsuit, a tank top, shorts, and flip flops and you’re good.
If you want to spend your days at the beach, the pool, family friendly restaurants and exploring shops – Gulf Shores is your choice.
In full disclosure to have the bad with the good: I will say that some of the tourist that visit can be very obnoxious with a pretty decent dose of self absorption, entitlement and a severe lacking in personal awareness and empathy which is why at sometime the area was given the nickname – Redneck Riviera. This was more obvious during COVID. You may at times see and hear racist remarks and promotion of anti-American sentiments and flags. Generally these are from visitors but parades (like the Orange Beach Mardi Gras Parade) and other local events may have similar anti-American propaganda. Orange Beach and Destin have the same problem, it’s just a little more visible in Gulf Shores due to more public spaces and increased amount of day trippers from nearby cities.
I’ve travelled a lot (12 countries and many states) and I will say I’m much more likely to witness customers being rude to wait staff or people in general just being quick to loose their tempers in the Southeast over any place that we’ve travelled but that’s not related to just one city – it’s a reginal problem including most of Florida. As an example, I’ve had a large elderly man loom over and yell at my young teen in a souvenir shop for wearing a mask during the height of COVID. It’s not uncommon to have the table next you talking loudly about other people. Parents are more likely to harshly criticize kids. The kid will be acting age appropriate and the parent will be acting like a fool. For the majority of visitors, this may not be something that is noticeable but it is there and can put a damper on vacation vibes.
Orange Beach: “Life is Better Here”
Orange Beach generally has newer condos, newer restaurants and updated parks. There are numerous activities that are family friendly or for any stage in life. It can be pretty crowded in the summer but not as crowded as Destin. Orange Beach has most of the amenities of Destin without as much hassle.
Destin: “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”
I don’t think anyone would call Destin a fishing village but it has had a large influx of cash. The vibe of this city I would consider to be more of a beach resort atmosphere. Some areas like San Destin are large resorts. The city can be crowded with many events that show of who has the biggest and best. Generally people may dress up more and be a little more “showy.”
If you’re looking to spend your day at a private condo on the beach and your nights dressed up and shoulder to shoulder at the beach bars, Destin is probably your choice. Destin is not a town afraid to show of it’s plastic – cards and other parts. If you’re interested in seeing some of the glitz and glam – visit the results at a fishing tournament at San Destin – 7 figure boats and 6 figure prize money.
Destin can still be enjoyed without going all out and trying to keep up with the Jones’s but if you are trying to plan a relaxing low-key reset during the summer, you may want to choose a different city.
Who has the best Shopping? Gulf Shores, Orange Beach or Destin?
I would say that Destin wins this one. Both areas have shopping option, Destin just has the easiest access to shopping.
Destin Shopping: Destin has an outlet mall with many name brand stores as well as smaller shopping centers. San Destin also has shops that are fun to explore.
Orange Beach Shopping: Orange Beach’s shopping options mostly surround The Wharf – a good sized entertainment complex with numerous shopping, activity and dining options.
Gulf Shores Shopping: Gulf Shores has several souvenir shops like Souvenir City that are fun to explore. Most of these are near the main public beach area. There is an additional shopping space at Pelican Place just north of the bridge. Foley also has a large outlet mall with playground and many name brand shopping options.
Who has the best food? Destin, Gulf Shores or Orange Beach?
Both areas have great choices for food options and I don’t think I’d pick one or the other just because of the food. Gulf Shores generally will have more choices for family run older restaurants. Orange Beach has some higher end options that usually rebrand every few years. Both Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have a few themed family friendly choices as well. Destin has a similar variety of restaurants. I’m fond of McGuire’s and tend to choose Acme for a relatively easy choice. San Destin has numerous options. Destin has several areas that give off a laid back beach bar vibe as well as higher end options.
Who has the best water Activities? Destin, Orange Beach or Gulf Shores?
Both areas on the Gulf Coast have many ways to get on the water. Both Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area and Destin will have wave runner rentals, para-sailing, pontoon boat rentals, sailing trips, fishing trips, and dolphin cruises.
Orange Beach has quicker access to water activities than Gulf Shores because of the bay areas. The most popular area to hang out in Orange Beach is Robertson Island near the Perdido Key Bridge but there are other places to enjoy a day on the water in Orange Beach.
Destin has Crab Island – a shallow area of water where hundreds of boats tend to anchor on a weekend. This area may also have floating obstacle courses and other activities
If you’re looking to be around a lot of people on an island party-like setting then choose Destin. Pick Orange Beach for something a little less crowded.
Who has the best things to do? Gulf Shores or Destin?
Gulf Shores and Destin both have similar things to do with little differences.
Waterparks: Gulf Shores has Waterville, Destin has Big Kahuna’s. I like Big Kahuna’s better but it was very crowded when I went. Both are nice. OWA’s Tropical Falls (an indoor water park in Foley near Gulf Shores) has recently opened and offers a choice for days when the weather may not be great.
Zoos: Destin has the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park (it’s actually in Ft. Walton). The Gulfarium has interactive marine encounters and learning opportunities. A little farther down the road (about 30 minutes) is the Gulf Breeze Zoo. The Gulf Breeze Zoo is a wonderful little zoo and a great space to spend the day. Gulf Shores also has a zoo. It was featured on the Animal Planet Show Little Zoo that Could which chronicled the events of Hurricane Ivan. The zoo has recently been moved to higher level ground. About 30 minutes north of Gulf Shores is Alligator Alley which is a fun experience where you can watch very large alligators be feed as well as interact with other reptiles. Destin has Gator Beach which is also an interactive animal park.
State Parks: In between Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is the Gulf Shores States Park and Hugh Branyon Back Country Trail. This park has wonderful hiking and biking trails. It also has a nature center, gulf-front pier, camping, and play structures along the paths. This park has several areas that help visitors get away from the crowds and into nature. Destin has Henderson Beach State Park to get away from the crowds. Orange Beach also has the city parks of Waterfront Park.
Walking & Shopping Areas: Both cities have areas that are fun to walk, explore and shop. Destin has the Harbor Boardwalk, Destin Commons, and San Destin are The Village of Baytowne Wharf. Orange Beach has The Wharf and San Roc Cay. Both San Destin and The Wharf host community activities with The Wharf commonly hosting concerts.
Both Cities have Golf, Small Museums, Mini-golf, Go-carts, Arcades, and many more fun activities, free activities and activities to do when it rains.
Destin will slightly win this category.
Which is more Family Friendly? Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, or Destin?
Both areas are very family friendly and make great family vacations. The overall family friendliness will depend mostly on individual lodging. The more activities available on-site the less stressful the trip. Aim for lodging with less crossing of large roads. Choosing places to stay near activities with less time in the car can make things more family friendly as well.
Who has the best night life? Destin, Gulf Shores or Orange Beach?
Destin: Destin wins this competition. Destin has several areas of night time entertainment with San Destin being my favorite area. Destin Harbor is another area with night options.
Orange Beach & Gulf Shores: Both Orange Beach and Gulf Shores have several options for night-life although they’re not generally in one central area. Most are individual restaurants that offer live music after a certain time at night. The most famous and a must visit it the Flora-Bama on the Florida/Alabama line.
Who has the worst traffic? Destin, Gulf Shores or Orange Beach?
Destin has this one.
I, personally avoid Destin as much as possible in the summer. I really have enjoyed all my visits to San Destin but to get there from the west is not pleasant. If you are able to get a condo and you do not have to leave, then you’ll have a good trip. If you’re like me and don’t due well in lines then it may put a damper on your trip. At times it can take 20 minutes to get a mile down the road.
Planning your vacation in “shoulder season” – May, August, September, or October can make traffic and waiting for meals much better. Plus beaches are more pleasant (but get trip insurance that covers for hurricanes)
Orange Beach and Gulf Shores can be quicker to navigate but can also be very crowded with a lot of traffic in the summer (especially from the Wharf to Canal Road). Avoid crossing the beach road especially on the Orange Beach side. There are pedestrian injuries every year and there have been fatalities. Orange Beach is not set up for pedestrian traffic (but neither is Destin). Gulf shores may be a little more pedestrian friendly with a smaller roads to cross.
All three areas may have long waits for dinner. Reservation systems are not common for the area. For popular restaurants expect to have an hour wait in the summer. Going a little early (around 5pm) or visiting less trendy places can be helpful.
Overall – which is better for vacation Destin or Gulf Shores?
Destin: busy city, many activities, blue/green water, night-life, traffic, several walkable areas
Orange Beach / Gulf Shores: A little calmer, many activities, sometimes water is not as blue, not as many nightlife choices
Both are great choices.
