Carnival in Malaga with Kids
We love Carnival (or Mardi Gras as we call it in the Southern US). Since we moved to Colorado we’ve been in serious withdrawals. Luckily for us, Spain has Carnival and also lucky for us it was a great place to take the kids. We originally were aiming for the festivities in Cadiz but chickened out at the last-minute (driving, parking, crowds and tired kids – we bailed). We did however make it to Malaga and we were glad we did.
Carnival in the Andalusia of Spain is a lot of fun. I just loved the history and traditions. The largest celebration near us (besides Cadiz) was in Malaga. We also attended several small Carnival celebrations in our home base town of Olvera.
Malaga celebrates Carnival with parades, singing and a very festive atmosphere. We really enjoyed the local costume competition. These “costumes” are really mini floats and they are intricate and fabulous. We also enjoyed the singing groups roaming through town. Groups dress up in fun costumes and spend time roaming the streets serenading people passing by and making impromptu performances. These singing groups are great and put on wonderful shows.
Getting to and where to Park in Malaga for the Carnival Parade
When we first arrived we easily parked at the marina parking garage, grabbed a quick bite at McDonald’s (kids…), and stopped at the playground. We then made our way to the main pedestrian streets and wandered around. The waterfront/downtown area is a really lovely area of Malaga. As we roamed more people began to show up, many in costume.

Before the parade we wandered around the downtown and parade area. We watched a very elaborate costume contest and really enjoyed the roaming singing groups. The atmosphere is fun, festive and very family friendly. There are several shops in the are that are also fun for a break.
The Malaga Carnival Parade
The parade was great. The carnival parade we watched in Malaga did not have the large floats that we are use to in the states but it did have dance groups and great costumes. The confetti was everywhere (the kids – and us loved it). The atmosphere was so much fun and I’d love to do it again.
I’m so grateful our kids got to experience this tradition in a completely different way.
Details, Tip, & Tricks for Carnival in Malaga
- Park in one of the main garages in the marina area and give yourself time to roam
- Enjoy the atmosphere and try not to rush
- If the kids get restless, there are some nice playgrounds near the marina.
- Just have fun. It really was a low stress trip.
